What is an organ transplant?
Organ transplantation is the process of transferring a donated organ to someone with organ disease, through a surgical procedure. The organ transplanted can come from a living donor or a deceased donor, depending on the organ in need. The most commonly transplanted organs are the kidney, liver, pancreas, heart, lung, and small bowel.
What are the causes?
The list of causes of organ disease, and subsequent failure of the organ, is extensive and varies from organ to organ. Kidney transplants for end stage renal disease (ESRD) is the most common type of transplant. The most common causes of ESRD in adults is from long term, and generally poorly controlled, chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Across all organs, the cause of failure of the organ can be from autoimmune disease, trauma, hereditary, self-inflicted (drug abuse, alcoholism), prescription medication induced, chronic conditions, infections, and at times a completely unknown cause just to name a few.
What does treatment look like?
Once you undergo a transplant, it becomes a difficult balance of preventing the new organ from rejection (the immune system attacks the organ) through the use of immunosuppressant medications, while preventing you from developing infections due to the immune system being blocked too much. These medication regimens can become very complex and in need of constant monitoring. Understanding your medication regimens and keeping compliance with your medications is of the utmost importance in order to prevent the rejection of the organ, extend the life of the organ, and also extend the life of the patient.
